The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) has just published the fifth edition of the “Researcher career path in Spain at a glance!", which gathers all the Spain-based human resources in research calls that have been offered in the 2018-2020 period.
The objective of the present report is to give scientists access to all public and private open calls available at the different stages of the researcher career path (at the European-, State- and Regional-levels).
The map shows research opportunities in the public and private sector while also displaying other R&D professional options. It is worth reminding that this map does not include all human resources calls specific of each university and research centre. It is therefore recommended to visit the websites of those research institutions one is interested in for other job opportunities.
If you miss any call on this map or have any suggestion to improve it, please do not hesitate to contact us via euraxess-spain@fecyt.es.
The Spanish Foundation of Science and Technology (FECYT) has published a mentoring toolkit, with all the related material, stemming from the experience of designing, implementing and evaluating the first edition of “REBECA-Researchers Beyond Academia Mentoring Programme”, which was organized within the framework of the European Project EURAXESS TOP IV in which FECYT participates due to its role of EURAXESS Spain coordinator.
REBECA is a programme aimed at early career researchers (from PhD candidates to early postdoctoral researchers) wishing to explore professional options beyond academia with the support of mentors with professional profiles linked to science, engineering, math, social sciences or humanities working in private companies, public administration or the third sector. In Spain, the first edition of the programme had 46 pairs and produced very positive results.
The toolkit published now is intended to be a guide for any institution interested in developing a mentoring similar to REBECA as part of their capacity building portfolio for researchers. It covers all the key issues in each of the programme stages (from the design, to the recruitment of participants, and daily management of the pairs) providing recommendations to ensure success. About EURAXESSEURAXESS is an initiative launched by the European Commission that is present in 42 countries and aims at supporting researchers in issues related to mobility and professional development.
The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) has launched the mentoring programme FEminist Leadership In SciencE - FELISE.
The programme is part of the European project Gearing Roles and it puts young women researchers in touch with more senior women researchers in order to support their career development and to jointly reflect about the necessary institutional changes to foster gender equality y research and teaching.
The programme has formed 35 pairs of researchers that, during the next seven months, will virtually meet to reflect and debate about different issues related to gender equality in research and teaching such as policies and institutional norms, narratives about excellence in research, integration of the gender perspective in research and teaching and the impact of confinements due to COVID 19 in the career development of women researchers, among others. Also, the programme will include training sessions about career development and leadership
The main objective of the programme is to achieve that FELISE young researchers are readier to face their professional challenge and increase their commitments towards gender equality policies.
At the end of the programme, participants will be able to present their findings to gender equality units at their institutions. Also, results of the impact of the programme will be published and a toolkit about how to design and implement mentoring programmes to achieve gender equality in research will be issued.
About Gearing Roles
The Gearing Roles project aims at implementing gender equality plans in six European institutions.
The project has received funding from the research and innovation programme of the European Union, horizon 2020, under the grant agreement number 824536. It started in January 2019 and will last 4 years.
The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), as part of the H2020-funded consortium “Using Science For/In Diplomacy for Addressing Global Challenges (S4D4C)”, has collaborated in the creation of the first European science diplomacy online course.
FECYT has designed four out of the eight training modules, these contain teaching content up-to-date, interviews with national and international experts, brainstorming questions, and self-assessment exercises. All the material is in English.
Concretely, the course covers a theoretical and academic conceptualization of science diplomacy; the array of stakeholders and networks involved; it also analyses the European Union ecosystem; it deals with different national, regional and thematic approaches; it offers information about the required skills and knowledges to work in this field and it explains the role of science diplomacy through different case studies such as infectious disease, open science, food security or the large infrastructure in Jordan: SESAME.
The course is free of charge and lasts for approximately 15 hours. It is conceived for diplomats and scientists, who want to expand their knowledges and specialize their professional careers into this field; science counsellors and attachés at embassies; government officials in charge of these competences in different ministries; and even Masters’ or Bachelors’ Degree student who may be interested in the topic.
The S4D4C consortium will organize an introductory webinar to this online course through the GotoWebinar platform on 30th June and 2nd July.
About S4D4C The European consortium “Using science for/in diplomacy for addressing global challenges” (S4D4C) is to support current and future European science diplomacy for the benefit of European capacities, EU foreign policy goals and especially the development of solutions for global challenges. The consortium aims to carry out empirical research and nurture a lively European science diplomacy community through the organisation of networking meetings, workshops, online courses and publication of policy reports and briefs that trigger public and policy discussion in the EU, Member states and interested institutions. S4D4C involves up to 10 European institutions among which FECYT is present. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 770342.
The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) published on the Day of Europe, last Saturday 9th May, the policy report “Calling for a Systemic Change: Towards a European Union Science Diplomacy for Addressing Global Challenges”. There is also an executive booklet available for fast reading.
The policy report has three main sections. First, it sets a proposal of a vision, mission, and principles for EU science diplomacy for addressing global challenges. Next, it identifies the main stoppers, warnings, and drivers for global collaboration in science, diplomacy, and science diplomacy.
The current COVID-19 pandemic has shown the need for a global and multilateral response of all countries. In this context, science has a key role as a source of information for the design of global and national policies and strategies that have a subnational and local implementation.
Lastly, the policy report introduces the basis for a systemic change based on three transversal processes (learning system, integrative leadership, and change of culture) around five spheres: knowledge in policy-making, governance with no silos, building new alliances, strengthening institutions, and nurturing people or professionals in the science-policy-diplomacy interface.
This report is a product of the discussion of the global community of practitioners in science diplomacy that gathered in two international S4D4C networking meetings, celebrated in Madrid and Berlin.
Call for action! The report is meant to be a live and collaborative document, so the authors invite scientists, diplomats, policy-makers, and other science diplomacy practitioners to provide comments, and ideas, and suggestions via e-mail to s4d4c@fecyt.es by 10th October 2020. Please, those interested state your full name and job affiliation. Comments and contributions will help publish an improved version of the report by the end of 2020.
