For another year, FECYT presents a new publication of Social Perception of Science and Technology, corresponding to the data compiled in the 2010 survey. This is the fifth edition of the survey that has been published by the Foundation every two years since 2002. This sociological study currently has a sample of almost 8,000 interviews and it has been consolidated as a powerful tool for analysing the opinion of society on science and technology.
This report, which is prepared annually, offers summarised information about the state of the national scientific-technological system together with its more recent developments, using the main macroeconomic variables.
In the past three years, the Web of Science, a database of citations and bibliographic references has gone from indexing 72 Spanish scientific journals to indexing 173 at present. In addition, the company Thomson Reuters publishes in the database of the Journal Citation Report (JCR) the quality index that classifies journals by subject area, allowing rankings to be established of those that have received the greatest number of citations and that have the best impact factor in their category.
Following the publication of the 2010 impact factor, this report offers an analysis of the progress and the growing presence of Spanish magazines over the last few years, in the JCR, with detailed information of its subject classification and variation with regard to the quartiles in which they are classed.
Since the very beginning FECYT has worked to study female science and technology researchers. The main objective is to analyse the situation and work to improve it wherever possible. In this respect, and in addition to the measures taken in non-university education, a continued interest has been taken in the presence of women in all fields and levels of the Spanish Science and Technology System, thus responding to the indications provided by the European Commission and Parliament. This report is an updated version of the report carried out in 2005.
FECYT has worked with the research group SCImago since 2004 on the yearly analysis and evolution of bibliometric indicators of scientific activity in Spain. They work with support from the data representation tool called Atlas de la Ciencia ('Atlas of Science'). The result is a comprehensive report that includes the scientific production indicators on a national, regional and international level depending on the research areas.
