The kick off meeting of the European project “S4D4C: Using science for/in diplomacy for addressing global challenges” took place in Viena on the 1st and 2nd of February of 2018. The project, funded by Horizon2020, aims at supporting current and future EU science diplomacy.

FECYT, the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation (SEIDI) and the Spanish Agency for Cooperation and Development (AECID) organized the course “Science diplomacy for management officers for public policy in Latin-America” from the 11th to the 14th December, which was held in the AECID training centre in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia). 

Last 22nd November, the debate “Science, Communication, and Society: colloquium with Goyo Jimenez and Luis Quevedo” was held in the Spanish embassy in London. The event was inaugurated by the Counsellor for Cultural and Scientific Affairs Miguel Oliveros, and was then chaired by the FECYT Science Coordinator Lorenzo Melchor.

On November 17th, FECYT traveled to Düsseldorf (Germany) to present at the Nature Career Expo, the new professional opportunities for researchers in Spain.

Last November 8th the international final of the Falling Walls Lab, a contest of young scientific talents, was held in Berlin. FECYT was there to support the candidates coming from Spain. Emre Ozan Polat, researcher at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) and winner of Falling Walls Barcelona, ​​presented his project based on nanotechnology to monitor vital parameters with flexible and transparent devices that adhere to the skin.

The public presentation of the Society of Spanish Researchers in Swizterland (ACECH) took place in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich on November 15th. The goal of the meeting, attended by around 90 participants, was to introduce the association to the Spanish researchers´ community in Switzerland.

Last 4th and 5th October, FECYT organized a seminar in the Spanish embassy in London and had a promotional stand in NatureJobs Career Expo London, respectively. 

Last 28th and 29th September, ten scientists and ten diplomats who were selected to participate in the 2nd edition of “Ambassadors for Science” gathered in the Spanish embassy in London for the first of the programme sessions. 

On September 21st took place in Madrid a joint event of the Secretary of State of Research, Development and Innovation, FECYT and the German Service of Academic Exchange (DAAD) in Madrid, in order to celebrate the scientific and innovation collaboration between Spain and Germany.

Executive summary of the guidelines for the management of the mobility of the foreign reseacrher in Spain 2017. The guide compiles the main issues that a foreign researcher needs to tackle when coming to work in Spain and it targets both researchers themselves and their hosting institutions. The main topics of the guidelines are the characteristics of the Spanish R&D&I system and the researcher career in the country, the recognition of foreign qualifications for academia and professional purposes, the labor market, the tax and the social security systems, the entry and residency requirements, the health and education systems and the EURAXESS Spain network that gives support to mobile researchers.
