FECYT organizes in Madrid an international conference about science diplomacy

FECYT organiza un congreso internacional sobre diplomacia científica

On 12, 13 and 14 December, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) will organize in Madrid, in collaboration with the partners of the European project Using science for/in diplomacy for addressing global challenges (S4D4C) and the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development, the international congress "European scientific diplomacy beyond 2020. First global meeting of S4D4C".

The main goal of the conference, that will be opened by Pedro Duque (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities),  will be to discss how science diplomacy can contribute to national, regional and international challenges. Also, the future of European Union science diplomacy and how to coordinate it with different member state approaches will be brought to the table.

Science diplomacy and advice professionals, European Commission representatives, diplomats from different countries and scientists will participate in the meeting. It is worth mentioning the participation of Mona Nemer, chief science advice of the Prime Minister of Canada; Robin Grimes, former chief science advice of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom; Peter Gluckman, president of the International Network of Government Science Advice (INGSA) and Cristina Fraile, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC, among many others.

Science diplomacy is choral and performed by many different actors; this reality will be acknowledge in the conference so a number of diverse projects and initiatives making the case for science being an essential tool for international relations will participate in the discussion.

The conference is addressed to science diplomacy professionals, researchers and diplomats with an interest in the matter, international relations professionals, policy makers and politicians.

Registration will be managed on a “first come first served” basis.

About the S4D4C project
One of the main goals of the European project Using science for/in diplomacy for addressing global challenges (S4D4C) is to reinforce a European science diplomacy that integrates all the stakeholders currently working on it and to build an international network of experts and institutions at the interface of science and technology, policy making, diplomacy and international relations.
