The spatial distribution and fate of petrogenic and pyrogenic
hydrocarbons in coastal sediments following the Aegean Sea
oil spill (Galicia, NW Spain) was investigated through a detailed
study of chemical markers. Alkanes and acyclic isoprenoid
hydrocarbons were degraded within six months of the accident,
but triterpane and sterane distributions were still detectable
and were useful in monitoring, respectively, the oil source
and weathering. Aromatic steranes were also useful source
indicators, and oil degradation was clear from the decrease
of certain alkyl ibenzothiophene and phenanthrene isomers.
The pyrogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons produced in
the tanker wreck were found more persistent than the
petrogenic ones. However, the presence of the oil in the sediments
was recognized even one year after the accident and was found
particularly preserved in the subsurface layers. (C) 2001

Several biomarkers of exposure to organic pollutants, namely
the cytochrome P450 system, glutathione S-transferases, superoxide
dismutase, DT-diaphorase and lipid peroxidation, were measured
on mussels collected in five locations along the Galician
Coast (NW Spain), 6, 9 and 12 months after the Aegean Sea
oil spill. Among the studied biomarkers, a significant induction
of the cytochrome P450 content and lipid peroxidation, determined
as tissue concentration of malondialdehyde equivalents, was
detected in mussels collected near the wreck point 6 months
after the spillage. Thereafter, no significant differences
between reference and polluted sites were detected. Nevertheless,
the data suggest the existence of oxidative stress in mussel
populations during the September-December samplings. A significant
elevation of superoxide dismutase activity was detected in
September-9 months after the accident-and this elevation was
particularly evident in those stations Located closest
to the wreck point. Lipid peroxidation increased throughout
the year and despite the existence of a strong seasonal effect.
the whole data set was correlated with total PAH body burden
(R = 0.56).

Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were determined in tissues
of mussels (Mytilus edulis), clams (Tapes semidecussata), cockles
(Cardium edule), and oysters (Ostrea edulis), collected 3, 6,
9, 12, and 34 months after the Aegean Sea oil spill occurred
in the Galicia coast (NW Spain) in December 1992. Petroleum
uptake was confirmed by the presence of an unresolved complex
mixture of hydrocarbons containing fossil markers, such as triterpanes
and saturated and aromatic steranes. These markers were useful
in assessing the spatial and temporal evolution of the spilled
oil in the area, resulting in the pregnane derivatives particularly
enriched in the bivalve tissues. The distribution of parent
3-6-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons reflected the concurrence
of oil residues and combustion products, possibly from the tanker
fire. These distributions were depleted in higher ring components
with respect
to those found in sediments, indicating a lower bioavailability
of the pyrogenic components but a longer persistence in time.
Qualitative and quantitative differences in bioaccumulation
were found among bivalves, sampling sites and over time. Aliphatic
and aromatic hydrocarbons also exhibited different bioaccumulation
trends. A significant decline of the hydrocarbon contents was
particularly evident from 3 to 6 months after the accident,
althoughincidental increases, probably related to the resuspension
of the polluted sediments by stormy weather, were observed.

Amoco Cadiz; Aegean Sea; oil; bioindicators; amphipods; polychaetes
The Amoco Cadiz oil spill in 1978, and the Aegean Sea oil spill
in 1992, affected soft-bottom communities, respectively from
the Bay of Morlaix (western English Channel) and from the Ria
de Ares and Betanzos in the northwestern Iberian peninsula.
These infralittoral communities on muddy fine sand showed similar
species composition and structure and occurred in similar hydro-climatic
conditions. The effects of the spills were identical in both
areas with the disappearance of the amphipods especially those
from the amphipod genus Ampelisca with a very low colonization
of these species during the four years after the spill. The
recovery rate of the amphipods was slow but progressive, In
such communities no proliferation of opportunistics was observed
after the stress. In the sites, where polychaetes dominated
before the spill, they remained dominant, whereas other sites
showed very low total abundances during the two years after
the spill due to the absence of compensation for the disappearance
of these crustaceans, In fact, there was a very low impact of
the spill on polychaetes, but a high one on amphipods, In the
future, it is suggested to focus monitoring after a spill only
on a single amphipod group proposed as a bioindicator for detecting
the impact of pollution. A polychaete/amphipod ratio is proposed
to reflect temporal change of soft-bottom communities analogous
to the nematode/copepod previously suggested for the meiobenthos,
Detailed knowledge of the qualitative and quantitative structure
of a benthic community is still needed in order to identify
very precisely the effect of a pollution event. (C) 2000 Elsevier

Oil pollution produced by natural or human causes is of great
importance to both the environment and the economy, and it is
a subject of increasing public concern. This paper presents
a project for the development of a low cost demonstrator system
for the detection of marine oil spills. The system is based
in the analysis of satellite SAR images. SAR images are presently
the only reliable remote sensing data suitable for the purpose.
The main functionalities of the system include SAR raw data
preprocessing, quick-look image generation and analysis, full
resolution image generation and analysis and report compilation.

Possible molecular biomarkers of impact by organic pollution
on mussels were applied to samples from five sites along the
Galician Coast, Spain, taken 6 months after the oil spill from
the tanker ''Aegean Sea.'' Whole body aliphatic hydrocarbon
concentrations were similar at all sites, but specific chemical
ratios (resolved/ unresolved hydrocarbons; carbon preference
index; pristane/phytane) indicated a predominance of degraded
petrogenic hydrocarbons nearer the oil spill. Levels of whole
body polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (sum of 13 PAHs) increased
steadily towards the oil spill, and were paralleled by increases
in digestive gland levels of total cytochrome P-450, CYP1A-like
protein and lipid peroxidation (con. coeffs. with PAHs of 0.64-0.67).
Differences were more marked in CYP1A-like protein than total
cytochrome P450, indicating induction of specific P450 isoenzyme(s).
No differences between sites were seen for benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase,
glutathione S-transferase,
superoxide dismutase and DT-diaphorase activities. Bulky, hydrophobic
DNA-adducts were detected in digestive gland of mussels from
industrial and urban sites, but not from the site nearest to
the oil spill which had the highest tissue levels of PAHs. Overall
the results indicate induction of cytochrome P450(s) and oxidative
damage in mussel with oil exposure.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the time-space
evolution of oil spills in marine environments of arbitrary
and complex geometry. The model is applicable to gravity-viscosity
regimes, i.e. up to 1 week for large spills, and takes into
account dispersion caused by wind, tides and currents, spreading
and evaporation, as well as accumulation and dispersion along
the shorelines.
The computer model is tested against data reported from the
Amoco Cadiz accident, with satisfactory agreement on the extent
and location of the slick. The model is also used to simulate
and estimate the consequences of a hypothetical accidental spill
occurring in the vicinity of the Tarragona harbour during transportation
or unloading operations of crude oil. This is of importance
because the Mediterranean coast of Tarragona, and in
particular the Costa Daurada region, is one of the leading European
tourist resorts.
