Debate in Manchester about scientific mobility and researchers careers in Europe

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Last 4th June, around 30 people gathered in the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester for a double session about the scientific career, given by the Scientific Coordinator of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) in the Spanish Embassy in London, Lorenzo Melchor. This scientific day was embedded within the cycle of conferences “España Cien por Ciencia” of the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester.

The first session was an informative introduction of many funding opportunities for scientific mobility throughout the research career—PhD stage, short stays, postdoctoral stays, tenure-track positions, etc.—with special attention to the available opportunities in Spain, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

The second session was a workshop about the researchers’ career in the European Union. Different tools by the European Commission, mainly through the Horizon 2020 programme framework, for Member States to reach the European Research Area, were explained. Particularly, the following three tools were given special attention: the Euraxess network, the “European Charter & Code for Researchers” or the European project “Policy into Practise: EURAXESS Researcher Skills for Career Development – PIPERS”, in which FECYT has participated as a working package leader.

Attendees were able to debate about funding opportunities, differences in the professional development between Spain and the United Kingdom, or about the wide range of the stage at which European initiatives were developed in distinct countries. During these sessions, attendees also participated actively in an interactive workshop to address those skills that any good researcher or any other scientific professional should have to perform their jobs.

To note, both sessions emphasized the need for scientists to soon realize about their skills and vocations, so they can take better decisions throughout their professional careers. On the other hand, research institutions such as universities, research centres and companies, must all take the responsibility of providing training and a multidisciplinary development to their human resources by adopting specific strategies for career development.

These scientific careers workshops have been held throughout 2016 in different constituencies of the Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU): London (December 2015), Cambridge (in March), Birmingham (in April), Sheffield (in May), Manchester, Edimburgo y Glasgow (in June) and Oxford (in September).

This day in Manchester has been organized by the Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU) and the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester, with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), the Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the Spanish Embassy in London, the Fundación Ramón Areces, and the European City of Science Manchester 2016.
